Under the watchful gaze of his young assistant, and the threatening presence of a new generation of artists, Mark Rothko takes on his greatest challenge yet: to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.  The play, written by John Logan (The Last Samurai, The Aviator, Skyfall), follows Rothko painting murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant, under the impression they would be displayed in the lobby of the prestigious building. However, he refuses to deliver when he learns that they will instead be placed in an adjoining restaurant. Throughout the play, Ken acts as Rothko’s “student, gofer, whipping boy, and sounding board” (The New Yorker), and we are drawn with him into Rothko’s solitude. Through their conversations, we learn more about Rothko’s theories of art and stance on pop art.

MGC Artistic Director Michael Grandage directs this first ever U.K. revival since directing the world premiere at the Donmar Warehouse in 2009. The production went on to win six Tony Awards, including Best Play.  Award-winning stage and screen actor Alfred Molina (“Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark”) reprises his critically acclaimed performance as the American abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko. He is joined by rising star Alfred Enoch of U.S. television drama series “How to Get Away with Murder” and Harry Potter as his assistant Ken.
