‘Waltz from Spring into Summer’ with the St. Cecilia Chamber Choir

Event has passed

Join us for a concert of wonderful music that will make you want to dance! We are pleased to present a delightful program featuring Brahms' “Liebeslieder Waltzes” along with a Musical Potpourri from Medieval to Modern, including the music of Tallis, Pearsall, Weelkes, and Wilberg. Concerts will be on Friday, May 27 and Saturday, May 28; both performances start at 7:30 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 380 Academy Hill Road, Newcastle. The chorus is directed by Linda Blanchard and accompanied by Sean Fleming. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged for this popular event.

Johannes Brahms’ delightful “Liebeslieder Waltzes” (Love Song Waltzes) will headline the concert. Published in 1870 and setting the poetry of Georg Friedrich Daumer, the charming waltzes were an immediate success for Brahms, who wrote them in homage to the popular "Waltz King," Johann Strauss, Jr., as well as to his friend, Franz Schubert. Well-known music director and pianist John Mulcahy will join Sean Fleming to play the piece's four-hand piano accompaniment.

The concert will also include one of the oldest songs in the English language, "Miri it Is While Sumer Ilast," the beautiful Tallis anthem "With All Our Hearts," and Weelkes' "As Vesta was from Latmos Hill," which was composed in honor of the first Queen Elizabeth. The exquisite setting by Pearsall of "Lay a Garland" will follow. John Mulcahy will return to the piano for a four-hand piano arrangement of "Shenandoah" by Mack Wilberg, with the Irish folk song "Mairi's Wedding" rounding out the concert.

Choir members are Covid-vaccinated, boosted, and masked. Masks are strongly encouraged for the audience. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door before each concert. Doors will open at 7 p.m. To make sure to get a ticket, purchase one in advance soon for $15 at Sherman's Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta. Children and students are always free.
