Westport Island Column: More winter, public supper and more

Wed, 02/07/2018 - 7:15am

Hello friends and neighbors!

Just as I feared, that old groundhog predicted six more weeks of winter. We may as well embrace it! February is a good time to get together with friends for some camaraderie, maybe in front of a fire and maybe with something delicious to drink. We have discovered that Mexican dominoes is an enjoyable indoor game with not only a big element of luck, but also made more interesting with some strategic planning. (Just as in real life!) I like the flexibility and relative ease of the game, which can be played with between two and eight players. I know others gather for weekly mahjong games, and some enjoy cribbage or Scrabble too. Let me know if you are interested in learning how to play Mexican dominoes, my new favorite game!

Nita Greenleaf wants to invite everyone to a community supper at the fire station at 644 Main Road on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 4:30 to 6 pm. For $10 per person or $8 for kids under 8, you can enjoy a delicious hearty meal of roast pork and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, string beans, apple sauce, coffee or tea and dessert. Nita has proven herself to be a great cook for past community suppers. Why not invite some friends? You will be glad you did!

If you like to plan ahead, Gaye has informed us that the Town Meeting is on the calendar for Saturday, June 23. There is nothing like democracy in action at its most local roots. Plan to attend the annual meeting and have your voice heard.
