'Wings Over Wiscasset: Voices of Freedom' August 6
The Town of Wiscasset, Wiscasset Municipal Airport, Wiscasset Area Chamber of Commerce, Music Doing Good and Texas Flying Legends Museum present “Wings Over Wiscasset: Voices of Freedom” on Tuesday, August 6, 2013, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
This free, family-friendly day is dedicated to educating, inspiring and creating community while supporting three local nonprofit organizations: the Wiscasset Parks & Recreation Dept., Maine Aeronautics Association, and Not-Here.org’s “Justice in Action Program.”
Sponsors, vendors, a breakfast, a cookout and a “bucket brigade” will raise funds to support these worthy charities prior to and throughout the day. Wings Over Wiscasset combines interactive experiences with history, aeronautics, music and science.
Children and adults alike will hear presentations from and interact with the pilots who served our country in aerial combat. These pilots will fly a variety of World War II aircraft in a vintage air show, which takes place in the afternoon. Attendees can tour the airplane hangars and learn about the type and function of each Warbird. Veterans will also be in attendance to share their experiences serving in the armed forces.
The afternoon also includes antique car displays and parade presented by the Boothbay Railway Museum as well as “WWII, the Home-front” presented by a historian from Historic New England. Other mid day activities specifically designed for children include activities with pilots and planes, mad science experiments, arts and crafts followed by stage presentations for the kids MDG Singer songwriters and Mad Science Scientist.
This “history made fun” event culminates in a performance by Music Doing Good titled Voices of Freedom, including songs from the Great American Songbook, a musical armed forces tribute and original music. From the Andrews Sisters to Glenn Miller and beyond, Voices of Freedom celebrates the American dream and our shared history of struggles for freedom. Directly following the concert, “Wings Over Wiscasset” ends with a brilliant display of fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics.
