Organizers for the first ever “Set for Success” event in Wiscasset held a bake sale fundraiser at Ames True Value Supply on Saturday, July 20.

The  Wiscasset “Set for Success” event from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 11 is an offshoot of the “Feed Our Scholars” program that has been helping elementary students for seven years, according to spokesperson Gretchen Burleigh Johnson.

The August event at Wiscasset Elementary School will include free backpacks, school supplies and haircuts offered to all students pre-k to fifth grade including home-schoolers.

“Big Al said we had to do it,” said Burleigh Johnson.

Burleigh Johnson said although the bake sale hoped to raise the money to buy the backpacks and school supplies, Feed Our Scholars is looking for monetary and material contributions in advance of the “Set for Success” event.

“We are hoping to establish this as a yearly event,” she said.

“Feed Our Scholars” holds twice annual bake sales and other fundraisers, and has added “Set for Success” to assist all elementary students, she said. “We will be fundraising throughout the year,” she said.
