Todd Hartung visits senior center
Last Wednesday, the after dinner speaker was Todd Hartung, Director of the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency. He briefly went over what his job is and what the agency is responsible for. He said that in general it is much like a military operation that handles an event or incident by having an incident commander coordinate the activities of several groups or individuals. Depending on the event there may be a need for just a few or for many. In an event like hurricane Sandy that hit New Jersey, many groups were needed and many were over whelmed. Therefore planning is an essential part of the job.
The people who plan for what to do in an emergency as well as those who train continuously to respond to emergencies are seldom noticed except when an emergency happens. Then we expect all of them to work together and work quickly to resolve the issue while making no mistakes. It is good to see and meet the people who we depend on if an emergency situation arises in Lincoln County.
Over the past couple of weeks I have received emails with FedEx logos saying that a package failed to be delivered and instructing me to open and print a receipt needed to pick up the package. On occasion I do get packages through FedEx so my first thought was what it could be. Being suspicious I contacted FedEx first before opening anything. I was right, it was a scam and probably if I had opened the attachment a virus would have been launched or my email account would have been hijacked.
FedEx says it will never send an email with an attachment or ask for personal info in an unsolicited email. In general, never use a phone number listed in the email to verify the message. If any email asks for information or asks you to open an attachment don’t do it. If you think it might be legitimate look up a phone number or use one you normally use and talk to the company. Be safe not sorry.
The cribbage tournament winners on Tuesday, March 26 were Marlene Rines first, June Caton second, Ken Colby low score and Patty Bridgham had the high hand. The cribbage tournament winners on Thursday, March 28 were David Greenleaf first, Phoebe Cromwell second, Nancy Schilke low score and Larry Clark had the high hand.
Please note that Ken Colby did not have the low score last Thursday. Ken has gotten low for a couple of times in a row. There is skill associated with Cribbage but like many card games the run of the cards can negate all the skill you possess. This aspect of the game adds to the fascination (or frustration) that many experience when playing cribbage. This fast moving game can easily put a smile on your face or get you talking to yourself, but in the end it is fun!
