Coastal landscape painters, Loughridge and Klein, exhibit at Pemaquid

Two Pemaquid peninsula artists showing this summer at the Pemaquid Art Gallery at Lighthouse Park in New Harbor are Sally Loughridge and Barbara Klein. Their bold and colorful paintings depict familiar scenes from the coastal landscape. Both are largely self-taught who have had a passion for painting since childhood. They each claim that taking early instruction from other artists has been a significant contribution to their success.

Loughridge has been a successful member with the Gallery for almost two decades, and also shows her work in a wide variety of venues in the area. She works in both oil and soft pastel, which is sometimes applied over water media. Some of her paintings incorporate gold leaf for added highlights. Scenes that depict impending change particularly interest her, such as a coming storm, seasonal changes, or sunrise and sunset.

“The complex and mysterious interplay of form, color, texture, light and movement in ocean, sky, forest or garden” inspires Loughridge’s artistic endeavors. She finds endless source material in her home area as well as on Monhegan where she frequently paints. She is also an author and maker of creative jewelry. View her art at www.sallyloughridge.com

Her work also can be seen Mast Cove Galleries, Kennebunkport, Archipelago, in Rockland, and at an upcoming solo show at Camden Public Library in August.

Barbara Klein is drawn to structural elements in the coastal landscape - buildings such as houses, fishing shacks, and lighthouses, and rock outcroppings and trees. Her appealing oil paintings are drawn from reality, but interpreted with an artist’s eye and skill. They seem to be intimate portraits of life on the coast, depicting where people live, work, and vacation.

Working on location as well as in her studio, Klein has a unique color palette, drawn from nature yet impressionistic. Shadows and light are important elements and strong color injects energy and emotion in her work, evoking a response in the viewer. Her work is frequently seen in area exhibitions, and at Gifts at 136 in Damariscotta.
