Adams challenging King again for Woolwich select board seat

Woolwich voters have just one contested local race Nov. 6. Don Adams of Shaw Road is challenging incumbent David King Sr. for his seat on the select board.

The two men faced each other in 2015, King won re-election, 551-491. He has served as a Woolwich selectman for over 20 years, the last 13 as chairman.

Adams made his first bid at elected office in 2015 and campaigned door-to-door. Since then, he’s served on the town’s Solid Waste and Recycling Committee and frequent attends the bi-weekly select board meetings.

Jack Shaw is running unopposed for road commissioner. By a wide margin, voters returned Shaw to the office in 2015 when he faced a challenge by Joseph Creamer of Dana Mills Road. Shaw has been road commissioner for 35 years.

Although the town holds an annual town meeting in the spring, it elects its town officers at the general election in November.  So the incumbents’ terms don’t end until Dec. 31. Five members make up the select board which is assisted by the town administrator. The board meets on the second floor of the town office every other Monday.

Woolwich has 2,450 registered voters, according to Town Clerk Chelsea Lane. Residents can register to vote at the town office during regular business hours: Monday and Tuesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Proof of identity and residency is required; a valid drivers license showing a physical address in Woolwich provides both.

“We are able to accept alternate documents in many situations,” Lane said. Residents with questions should call the town office at 442-7094, she said.

Absentee ballots will be available starting Oct. 9. Applications to request one are available now in the town office, online, or by calling the town office.
