A Wiscasset man who allegedly failed to comply with the sex offender registry could face prison time if convicted.

Aaron Ashton, 33, of Wiscasset was arrested Dec. 18 after he allegedly failed to register with the Maine State Sex Offender Registry.

Ashton was arrested by Wiscasset Police Chief Troy Cline for the alleged failure to register.

Cline was informed of the infraction by an administrative assistant who reported that Sally Taylor of the Maine State Sex Offender Registry reported that Ashton allegedly failed to return his sex offender registration documents by Dec. 9.

Ashton received lifetime registration status after a 2000 gross sexual assault conviction at the Lincoln County Superior Court. In Cline's report, he states that in doing background research, he found that Ashton had failed to comply five times before the latest alleged infraction.

Two of those alleged infractions came within the last five years: Ashton was convicted of failure to comply with SORNA of 1999 on April 10, 2009 and again on July 1, 2010.

If convicted, Ashton could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $20,000 fine, as failure to comply with the sex offender registry is a Class B crime.
