Alna Column:

The Morris Farm in Wiscasset has a big heart for the community. Not only do they teach folks how to grow and raise their own vegetables and animals, but they give all the extra produce to local food pantries.

Until last Sunday I had no idea my church food pantry was on their list. This big thank you is from myself and the Wiscasset Church of the Nazarene congregation. We had big red tomatoes, cherry size yellow tomatoes, broccoli, carrots, potatoes, beet greens and onions to give out. It is nice to know that there are other organizations out there that care about folks besides the churches. We, who benefit from their generosity, say thank you to one and all who work at the farm.

Sept. 28 the HVNC will have their "Annual Race Through the Woods" event, along with Edible and Medical Mushrooms class. This is trail racing on foot through beautiful woodland will be two types: you race yourself or the clock, for all levels of runners. This year, 5-12 year-olds start at 9:30 a.m., running a short distance course. The race will be timed.

The day will also feature local food vendors, Sheepscot Valley Brewing, games for kids and adults, live music and a bonfire later in the evening.

The classes for mushrooms will be lead by Greg Marley. He has 35 years experience as an author and consultant to the Poison Center. He owns "Mushrooms for Health," a company offering healing mushroom supplements.

Well sure wish more folks had come out to the town meeting on last Monday night at the Meeting House. I don't understand why more folks are not interested in the running of their town. When someone has a problem with something, the folks should come hear the whole story. Don't wait until it is splashed all over the papers and makes Alna selectmen look like they don't know what they are doing. Then you want to know why you didn't know about the meeting, read the news posted in newspapers, notices posted at the post office, email if you’re on the list at office and check the Alna column.

Now you know I have to speak up for the 1st Selectman, David Abbott. He is the most honest, "town caring" man ever to sit on the selectman's board, usually as chairman.

I'm not saying anything bad about David Reingardt or Jonathan Villeneuve, it's just I have know David for 54 years; only four years for Jon and David. When someone wants them to do something underhanded, I don't blame them for saying they would resign. They did every part of the bidding process right on, it is not their fault only one contractor bid.

They checked for the legalities of what was done with Maine Municipal Association in Augusta; they keep the towns up to date on the laws of town governments. A few years ago there was a problem of not doing a bid process. With that resolved, who would believe these people are complaining now about the process being done. I feel bad for the selectmen, as my mom used to say "damned if I do and damned if I don't.” This splash in the papers is another thing for folks to point at and gossip about; it makes Alna look bad. Seems like some folks have not matured at all since couple of years ago.

OK, I am off my soap box, but I care about this town and the people in it.

Have a good week and remember read the newspapers and emails from your town to keep up with your meetings.
