Another animal cruelty report

Most people fall in love with their pets, pampering them to no end. But sometimes, animals are hoarded, mistreated and abused.

This week’s news out of Belfast where a couple was arrested and charged with 13 counts of animal cruelty was again disturbing. The dogs and cats needed immediate medical attention, some in critical condition and all showing signs of malnutrition and abuse.

It reminded me of a visit we made several years ago to a lady’s home in another part of the state who was selling kittens. When my wife and I arrived at the home, we came upon a horrid sight. There had to be at least 15 to 20 cats either roaming around or in cages. We saw some that were in poor health and others who were underfed. We did not buy a cat from her. I remember that a few days later, her home was visited by police and the cats were removed. Someone beat us to report this situation.

I understand that sometimes people need extra income by raising and selling animals but sometimes that gets out of hand, and they end up with too many animals to care for. I also understand that some people are selling their animals so they can buy illegal drugs. It seems that there are too many reports of these animal cruelty situations in Maine each year.

I urge readers to let the authorities know of any situations of animal hoarding and cruelty they may see. There are loving people who take care of their pets, and no animal should be mistreated. People who want to run a side business selling dogs and cats, or any other animals, should really be prepared to be able to feed and groom the animals before undertaking the job.
