Barbara A. “Nanny” Brooks, 72, died peacefully at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta with her loving family by her side.

She was born in East Boothbay on July 8, 1940, the daughter of the late Carl and Helen Woodward Rice. She grew up in East Boothbay and attended local schools.

While growing up she spent a lot of time with her family spending time at the Mill Pond, skating in the winter time and swimming in the summertime. She always had a good time with her brothers and sisters.

She loved racing and could always be found at the race track. She enjoyed watching her son-in-law and grandchildren race and would go to all of the various tracks throughout the state. Her husband Alden, could always tell if the family had a bad race because she would always come home and slam the door. When she took ill, it devastated her to not be able to make it to the track.

Her family was very important to her and she never missed a birthday or special event. She loved each and every one of her family members and would be willing to do anything for any of them.

She could be found throughout the week at one of the girl’s houses usually around supper time which the girls loved because she would always help with the clean up afterward. Her signature dish was her chocolate fudge and to this day no one has been able to recreate it although many have tried.

She enjoyed spending time shopping walking around Ames and Wal-Mart for hours usually running into a variety of people she knew along the way. She loved making trips to “Here’s the Scoop” in Dresden where she would enjoy her favorite flavor of ice cream, orange pineapple.

She was crafty, she enjoyed scrapbooking and would make every member of the family a memory book, something they all now cherish. She was a wonderful lady and a friend to all that knew her. The family enjoyed spending time together so she could recount the stories of her childhood in East Boothbay. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all that knew and loved her.

She was predeceased by her siblings Weston, Gordon, Betty, John, Louie, and Skipper Rice and a grandson, Keith Lavallee II.

Survivors include her loving husband of 43 years, Alden Brooks of Alna; daughters, Debbie Colby and her husband Charlie of Edgecomb, Laurie Creamer and her husband Joe of Woolwich, Rhonda Lavallee and her husband Keith of Bowdoinham; son, Stephen Brooks and his companion Ty Speck of Mt.
