Basket-making fundraiser March 28
After a cold, snowy winter and ensuing mud season, it's time for something fun to celebrate the coming of spring.
Wiscasset Feed Our Scholars/Set For Success is excited to announce just such an event: A chance to make a handcrafted basket that will bring natural beauty to any space.
On Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, Maré LeMay of Mindful Gardens, 62 Middle St. in Wiscasset, has graciously offered to lead a basket-making class as a fundraiser to benefit our Feed Our Scholars/Set For Success' missions. For $20 for an adult and $15 for a youth 12-18, attendees will enjoy learning to make a basket, and in the process support local children's growth and education.
LeMay's basket weaving classes are very popular, and space is limited to 20. But don't despair, if the morning class fills, LeMay has offered to lead a second class from 2 to 4 p.m. if numbers warrant.
LeMay's first basket weaving class was over 40 years ago, and she has been weaving and teaching basketry ever since. Drawn first to utility baskets due to her background in farming, the baskets she weaves all serve a purpose. Her baskets can be found at the Bath Farmer's Market, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and Wiscasset's very own Widener Company, and at her own space at 62 Middle St. When she's not weaving, she can be found in Midcoast Maine where she lives, farms and weaves. Her appreciation of the beautiful surprises the natural world offers is reflected in her art and work.
Wiscasset Feed Our Scholars provides bags of weekend food for each participating child attending Wiscasset Elementary School during the school year and beyond, while Set for Success' Aug. 16 event will provide the opportunity for each Wiscasset student to pick up teacher-recommended supplies to begin the new school year. Homeschooled children who would be attending Wiscasset schools are also able to attend. Provide for all so that no one is left out.
To register for the basketry class, please message Feed Our Scholars through its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wiscassetfeedourscholars or call St. Philip’s Church at 882-7184, leaving your name, number of attendees, and a return phone number for verification.
