Bennett won’t seek reelection to school committee

A second, new member will be needed for the Wiscasset School Committee in June. Colleen Bennett has decided she will not seek a second term.

Bennett’s announcement April 14 came less than two weeks after fellow committee member Sharon Nichols announced she would step down in June, leaving an opening for the two years left on her term. Bennett’s term on the new committee was for a half-year. The next term on that seat is for three years.

Bennett said in an interview that she now has additional responsibilities in her job at Wiscasset Ford; between those and her family obligations, she will not have time to serve on the committee, she said.

It was a hard decision to not seek re-election, Bennett said. However, she still plans to attend committee meetings, and she hopes to be involved with Partners In Education’s strategic planning efforts.

Asked for her outlook on the new school system the town is creating for July 1, Bennett said. “I think it’s going good. I think (Interim Superintendent Wayne Dorr) is doing a good job,” she added.
