Edward G. Hawkes Jr. of West Bath died on Sunday, July 1, 2012 on the farm with the love of his life, Marjorie by his side.

He was born on July 8, 1928 in Bath, the son of Edward and Harriet McNinch Hawkes. Upon the death of his mother, he was raised by his grandmother Bertha Tyler. On June 12, 1948 after knowing her for six years, he married his love, Marjorie Rogers in Bath.

He was employed for the City of Bath Public Works, then at Hyde Windlass and Bath Iron Works. He left to venture on his own in self-employment. In 1952, he and Marjorie purchased “The Farm,” raising chickens, other farm animals and soon raising the geraniums he was well known for. In 1973 they opened their second location in Wiscasset with the third location being opened in Bath.

When he wasn’t busy working on The Farm, he could be found on the water sailing with Marjorie going to many locations but his more memorable ones was to Boston Harbor for the Centennial and spending many summers in Penobscot Bay. As the seasons changed, his hobbies did as well. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed golfing, skiing hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. The other place he could be found was in the field every summer haying hundreds of bales of hay.

His pride and joy was his children and grandchildren who he was extremely close to.

He was predeceased by his parents and two grandchildren, Mickey Misner and Parker Leeman.

He is survived by his wife; son, Gary and his wife Susan of Cundy’s Harbor; son, Kevin and his wife Ada of Bethel; daughters, Karen of North Bath and Suzanne Misner and her husband Mickey of Westport Island; son, Mark and his wife Marjorie of Phippsburg; son, Scott of Brunswick; daughter, Beth Campbell and her husband Dennis of Whitefield; and sisters, Edith Hill of Phippsburg and Joan Fogg of Jefferson. Pappy is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Bath. The entrance is between the ponds.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bath Recreation Scholarship Fund, 4 Sheridan Road, Bath, 04530.
