Gerald Howes “Gerry” Rolfe, 84, died at his home in Pownal on Aug. 24, 2015, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. He was still known as “Daddy” to many in his family.

He was born Nov. 29, 1930, in New Haven, Connecticut, the son of the late Dorothy (FitzGerald) Rolfe and Arthur Willard Rolfe. As a boy and young man, he spent many summers on Capitol and Southport islands.

He was a graduate of South Kent High School in Connecticut and Lycoming College in Pennsylvania. He went on to achieve his CPA. He married Joan Steeves, of Wellesley, Massachusetts, in 1962.

He worked in finance and insurance at Price Waterhouse, Oxford Paper, and Arthur Young & Company. Upon moving to Maine in 1972, he owned and operated the Dudley-Weed Pharmacies in Portland and raised sheep with his wife and children on his farm in Pownal. He also worked for the city of Auburn, and served the people of Pownal for 26 years as selectman and town treasurer, where he proudly promoted land conservation and land-use principles.

Daddy spent many hours reading Christopher Robin poems to his children when they were young, and still enjoyed reciting them when the family was all together. He had an affinity for the history of the railroad, and could recite which trains used which tracks across the Northeast U.S. and Eastern Canadian regions. He also loved the history of the Boothbay region.

He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Judy Brann.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joan (Steeves) Rolfe of Pownal, and their children, Tom of North Waterboro, Chris, his wife Marybeth, and their children Evan and Alec of Morrill, Jon and his partner Janelle Lavallee of Gray, and Katherine and her partner Tiffany Townsend of Yarmouth. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his cat, Fuzzy; he was predeceased by his beloved cat, Boots “Commando Kitty.”

At Gerry’s request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends of Feral Felines, Portland, or a charity of your choice. To offer condolences and share memories with the family, please go to www.athutchins.com.
