James A. Rollins

James Albert Rollins of Boothbay Harbor and Clearwater, Fla. died February 10, 2014 in Clearwater, Fla., surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness.

Jim was born in Portland on November 12, 1940, son of Thelma Swift (Willis) Rollins of Portland and Sidney Fuller Rollins of Winthrop.

He graduated from Deering High School in June 1959. In June 1963 received his diploma from the Portland School of Fine and Applied Arts, with an emphasis on commercial art.

It was at the Portland art school, where they were both students, that he met his future wife, Dolores (Dolly) Chretien. They were married in September 1965 and moved to Boothbay Harbor.

Throughout Jim's working years he continued to develop his skills in photo mounting and scale modeling, lithographic printing methods, hand lettering, graphic arts, photography, black and white film processing and printing and shaker box making.

Over the years, his employers included National Marine Fisheries Service in West Boothbay, Boothbay Engineering, the State of Maine Department of Marine Resources, his own business, Rollins Signs, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor.

In their retirement years, Jim and Dolly formed a musical group that performed at special events, with Jim playing his accordion and Dolly singing songs in French, which were part of her Franco-American heritage. The group at various times also included a violin player, guitar player, bass player and another singer.

Besides his wife of 48 years, he is survived by a son, Timothy C. Rollins and wife Michele of Old Lyme, Conn.; a daughter, Christina Rollins Saylor and her husband Stuart of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; two grandchildren, Veronica E. and James P. Rollins; and sister, Patricia Rollins Pierce of Portland.
