Pauline Louise Cameron Smith, 87, of Yarmouth died at Maine Medical Center on Saturday, July 21, 2012 with family by her side.

She was born on January 14, 1925 in Southport. She was the youngest daughter of Dorothea (Streeter) and Lieutenant Niles Cameron, USCG. Pauline attended local schools in Southport and Boothbay until her family moved to Brunswick in 1936. She graduated from Brunswick High School, Class of 1943.

During World War II, Pauline relocated with her family to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. While in Portsmouth, she and her sister Ellen worked as telephone operators for New England Telephone. After the war Pauline and her family returned to the Portland area moving to Yarmouth.  Pauline then attended Northeastern Business School in Portland.  She met and married Frederick B. Smith of Portland and together they had two daughters, Margaret and Patricia.

Pauline had a broad range of interests and a lifelong love of education, formally and informally.  She studied cosmetology and became a hairdresser working in the Boothbay area.  She also worked as an office assistant with Campfire Girls but most of all, her greatest joy was being a homemaker and devoted mother for her two girls.

Pauline enjoyed reading newspapers, flower gardening, genealogy, especially the Scottish ancestry of the Cameron Clan.  She loved all animals and there were always many in her life.  Her childhood was filled with many fond memories of growing up in a Coast Guard family and being surrounded by her extended family that lived in the Boothbay area.  Pauline spent summers on Burnt Island living at the Coast Guard station with her family.

She will be remembered as a very unselfish, caring woman with a great sense of humor that showed itself in a well-turned phrase. Her spirit of generosity was evident in her sensitivity and placing others before herself which was only outdone by her great appreciation and admiration of the beauty of all of nature surrounding her. Pauline lived her life with vitality, happiness and in a world of wonder.

Pauline is survived by her two daughters: Margaret Smith and her partner Wayne Ross of Cumberland; Patricia Smith of North Yarmouth; as well as several nieces, nephews and grandnephews.  She was predeceased by her husband, her brother Raymond Cameron, and her sister, Ellen Berry.

A graveside service was be held on Saturday August 18 at 11 a.m. at Blanchard Cemeteryin Falmouth with the Rev. Diane Bennecamper officiating.  A celebration of her life at her home in Yarmouth immediately following.   Please visit www.lindquistfuneralhome.com to view a video collage of Pauline’s life and to share your condolences, memories and tributes with her family.
