Wiscasset School Committee

School panel to chart course for consolidation

A schedule for planning the consolidation of Wiscasset’s schools could come out of Thursday night’s school committee meeting, Chairman Steve Smith said.

The committee will be discussing the planning process, Smith said on July 23. He has said that, by October, he would like to have a proposed consolidation plan to show residents.

The committee faces the hard task of making consolidation both save money and  improve education, Smith has said. Merging schools has been a topic off and on since enrollment in Wiscasset schools dropped several years ago.

Tonight’s meeting comes as the town’s new school department nears the one-month mark. The committee is set to review and possibly adopt policies that were in place in Wiscasset schools when the town was in Regional School Unit 12; also tonight, the Wiscasset Police Department’s new school resource officer will meet with the committee. Voters in June agreed to fund the job.

The meeting at Wiscasset High School starts at 6 p.m.; at 5 p.m. Thursday, also at the high school, the committee is set to hear from administrators about the curriculum for the town’s schools.
