Seeking knitters for holiday help
The Positive Matters Foundation’s Family Holiday Wishes Program opened its helpline on November 1, setting the wheels in motion to help hundreds of local children.
Each year Family Holiday Wishes provides gifts, family dinners and warm clothing to parents of newborns to 13-year-olds.
“One thing we are always sure to give, are hats and mittens,” Director Cynthia Simonds said. “We want to know that all those little foreheads and fingers are toasty warm throughout the winter months.”
Knitters in the community have always been a big help to their program. Last year, dozens of pairs of mittens, often with matching hats and scarves, were hand knit and donated with the knowledge that they would keep someone warm right here in Lincoln County. Many of the people who give these hand-knitted items are experienced artisans who are always looking for a good reason to pick up their needles.
“We have some wonderful ladies (and gentlemen) whose children and grandchildren are all grown up,” Simonds said. “They love to create little pink or blue mittens for babies. Sometimes they make beautiful blankets. I just imagine parents tucking them under some little chin right before a goodnight kiss. I still have my favorite blanket from when I was little. There’s something really special about it — it reminds me of being safe and snug and loved.”
If you know someone who would like to share their knitting skills with Family Holiday Wishes or if you need assistance for your family this season, please call the helpline at 207-350-7799.
