Ship's Chow Hall owner buys Huber's Market

Tue, 01/29/2013 - 6:15pm

Huber’s Market on Route 1 in Wiscasset was auctioned off January 29 by The First.

Tina Fitzsimmons was the high bidder at $80,000. She will also take on the $226,000 still owed on the property, making her total $306,000.

Fitzsimmons is the business owner of Ship's Chow Hall, which is in the building along with the closed Huber's Market.

According to Wiscasset's assessor, the property is valued at $367,000.

Attorney Jacob Manheimer opened the bidding process, informing the bidders their bids would be in addition to the $226,000 owed on the loan.

Tina Fitzsimmons started the bidding at $20,000, Lester Morse  bid $30,000, and they continued to bid against each other until Fitzsimmons bid $57,000 over Morse’s bid of $55,000.

Manheimer called a brief recess before going on with the bidding. When the bidding resumed, Justin Laverriere, who had not previously made a bid, bid $79,000.

Fitzsimmons said, “$80,000.” After asking for more bids, Manheimer said: “Going once for $80,000, going twice for $80,000, going three times for $80,000, sold for $80,000.”

A large round applause came across the room in support of Fitzsimmons. She has rented the building that her restaurant is located in for many years.

“I love this property; no one loves it as much as I do,” Fitzsimmons said after the auction.

Kyle Yacaben purchased the business and property from the original owner Gordon Huber in January 2007.

A fire in December of 2010 destroyed the store and after nearly a year of being closed, Yacaben reopened the store in December of 2011, then closed it in June of 2012.

According to the Notice of Public of the property, the property is currently owned by K2 Holdings, LLC, with The First N.A. being the mortgage holder.

Because the conditions of the mortgage were breached, the bank foreclosed, and the property was put up for public auction.

All bidders were required to deposit $10,000 in cash or a certified U.S. funds made payable to Pierce Atwood LLP in order to register to bid.

Fitzsimmons, being the highest bidder, is required to sign a purchase and sale agreement calling for a closing on or before February 28, 2013.
