At about 12:27 a.m. Thursday, Lincoln County Communication Center received a report from Wiscasset Police Sergeant Alfred Simmons that he had been involved in a crash while driving a Wiscasset police cruiser.

Lincoln County deputies along with the Wiscasset Fire Department and Wiscasset Ambulance Service all responded.

An investigation into the crash has determined that Simmons, 64, was driving a 2013 Dodge Charger south on Route One in front of the Irving/Circle K convenience store.  A 2016 Acura SUV driven by Yeshi Khendrup, 42, of El Cerrito, California was attempting to exit the store lot onto Route One. Khendrup pulled into the path of the cruiser and was struck on the driver’s side.

Both vehicles received substantial damage and were towed from the scene. Khendrup reported no injuries.

Sergeant Simmons was transported to the Miles Campus of Lincoln Health in Damariscotta and later released after complaining of chest/stomach pain.  His injuries are not believed to be serious.

Khendrup was issued a traffic infraction summons for failing to yield the right of way.

This decision was made after interviewing both drivers and viewing video the store provided to the deputies.

Traffic on Route One was effected for about an hour while deputies investigated the crash and removed the vehicles from the roadway.

In response to a question from Wiscasset Budget Committee Chairman Cliff Hendricks April 14, Selectman Judy Flanagan said it was her understanding that the cruiser was totalled in the accident.
