Westport Island Column: Snow and holiday events

Fri, 12/05/2014 - 8:00am

T-shirt days are over, I guess. With the second mess of snow in a month, the road crew, Central Maine Power, and inventive cooks truly stepped up!

Lots of Thanksgiving Day gatherings and familiar dishes went sideways, but I’m hoping you had a safe, if not warm, holiday.

Maybe not the day you planned, but at least a good day that came your way. The entire town was out of power for two days, some of us maybe a little longer, and it took long hours to get things right. For one story, check out Gaye and Roger’s pioneer Thanksgiving at the Westport Island blog (just search for the blog, it will come right up). Send along your stories.

The weekend gave early elves some decent temps to decorate trees, roof lines and porches with a variety of colorful Christmas lights — an encouraging start!

Lots of holiday happenings this weekend. In Wiscasset, the Teddy Bear Sleepover is set for this Friday night/Saturday morning for youngsters in grades one to six. A fun-filled night with movies, swimming, pizza and more. Please call the Community Center (207-882-8230) for information about cost and to pre-register your youngsters.

Two special activities for the entire family are on the calendar for this Saturday. The special guy (Santa) cruises into Wiscasset’s waterfront around 3 p.m., and tree-lighting will be on the Common at 4:30 p.m., with carols performed by the Wiscasset School Band and Chorus.

Mixing things up a bit on Sunday is “Discover SCUBA” at the Wiscasset Community Center (10:30 a.m.). Could be an early Christmas present for anyone dreaming of warmer waters! Greg Cavanaugh is teaming up with the Community Center and an Auburn dive shop for this event for people to try scuba diving in a pool. Registration ahead of time is required. Please go to www.wiscassetrec.com. The cost is $28 per person with all equipment provided (just bring a bathing suit and towel). More questions: email Greg at greg@islandsignworks.com.

The Westport Community Association invites all Westport family, friends and area residents to “An Island Christmas” this Sunday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Community Church (next to the town hall). This is the highlight of our community’s holiday season!

The historic church has a freshly-painted ceiling, a beautiful new rug, and the kerosene lanterns will be aglow. You’ll enjoy our Westport Singers, along with traditional readings from the Bible.

Among our talented choir and musicians, Mara Abbott will play several pieces on the piano, Joseph McGrath the violin, Dewey Harris the guitar, and Dan Quinion will sing “I'll Be Home for Christmas."

Christmas cookies, hot chocolate and coffee will be served right after the program in the town hall. Help keep the shelves full at the Island Cottage Pantry by bringing non-perishable food or kitchen/bathroom cleaning items.

Picturing our mudrooms, basements and garages at-the-ready with more candles, saws, jugs of water, propane and extra mittens. Yep, humming our favorite carols, ready for whatever comes next!
