Westport Island: Visit the Wiscasset Art Walk

Mon, 07/28/2014 - 4:30pm
Wherever you are in the country, this summer is full of music, reunions, festivals, outdoor adventures, family celebrations, and yes, food!

This Thursday, July 31, come into Wiscasset from 5 to 8 p.m. for the second 2014 Art Walk.

Westport’s Diane Langley will be exhibiting her hooked rugs in Mac’s Place, a very comfortable, open coffee shop with lovely spaces for art. Diane is a third generation rug hooker, and grew up surrounded by beautiful rugs made by her mother and grandmother.  Her grandfather made several original patterns for her grandmother, including “Hollyhocks,” and Diane will have this with her this week.

Another local favorite you can catch is retired dentist and musician Jeff Grosser, who’ll play his accordion in John Sideli’s studio (on the second floor, above In The Cover). Last year, the Breakers Jazz Band was dynamite when they played on the pier in July. This is a must-hear If you like swinging, foot-tapping traditional jazz. They’ll play at 5 p.m. on the Pier. Later in the evening, the Wiscasset Chamber presents wonderful acoustic folk and blues music in the Alive on the River concert on the Common.

The Art Walk is very casual and lots of fun — there’s no cost to pop into stores and restaurants and enjoy a wide-variety of art and music. Matt O’Donnell will be in Treats, Sarah’s Café will host encaustic artist Ken Eason, and at 106 Main Street you’ll find a jewelry demonstration, rustic tables and wood carvings. One of my favorite places is the Butterstamp Workshop. This Thursday, Lois and David will be offering selections from their life-long Santa Collection for sale.

I could go on and on, as I’m known to do, but the Art Walk is also easy; just pick up a map at any place marked with balloons.

Meanwhile, planning is underway for the 16th Annual Craft Show in town on Saturday, Sept. 13 presented by the Westport Island Artisans Guild. The very busy Anne Cole-Fairfield and Pam Shockley are organizing this, and welcome artists and crafters to apply to participate; please give them a call, Anne at 207-882-5078 or Pam at 207-882-9412.
