Wiscasset is in line for $400,000 in cleanup funds for the former Mason Station ash pond sites, according to statements the town and U.S. Sen. Chellie Pingree, D - Maine released Wednesday.

Town Manager Marian Anderson released the following statement Wednesday afternoon:

"The Town of Wiscasset is excited to  announce that the Town was selected as one of the Maine communities for two clean up grants. This brownfield funding will positively impact the Town of Wiscasset  for years to come! The opportunity to repurpose this property will result in a boost in our local economy and spur growth and private investments in our community. Cleaning up and putting this property back into productive use will strengthen our local economy by bringing new businesses and job opportunities to our town, county and state. We appreciate the EPA’s ongoing commitment to providing Wiscasset the tools to transform this contaminated site. We are grateful to Senator Susan Collins and Senator Angus King for their work to secure this important funding for the Town of Wiscasset."

Pingree’s statement lists the news as an award, among $2 million in Environmental Protection Agency brownfields grants to assess and clean up polluted sites in southern and Midcoast Maine.

An EPA letter to Wiscasset Selectmen’s Chair Judith Colby states in part, “(The town) was selected as one of the entities EPA will begin negotiations with to award cooperative agreements for two cleanup grants.”
