Woolwich Grange honors longtime members
The Woolwich Grange honored four members with a combined 305 years of membership in the local club.
Although Edna Bradford Lord was not present at the meeting, she received the most significant award for her 85 years of membership in the Woolwich Grange. She will celebrate her 105th birthday on August 31, and is currently living in Harrison in an assisted living home.
For many years Lord lived in Wiscasset and taught at the South School. In fact, she was a teacher to John Sutter, a former grange member and is well-known to the people of Wiscasset. She is the widow of Lawrence Lord and mother of three children.
The other three members honored were Marion Grover Bailey, Charlotte Waltz Leeman Sutter and Grace Smith.
Marion Grover Bailey has been a member of the grange for 75 years. Bailey has been a resident of Woolwich all her life. She is the widow of Fernald Bailey. The mother of three enjoys her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She worked at the Bell Telephone Company for many years, and at Povich clothing store when it was in Wiscasset.
Charlotte Waltz Leeman Sutter has been a member for 70 years. She is the widow of Chester Leeman and John Sutter. She also has lived in Woolwich for a long time. Sutter is known throughout the state for her participation in other organizations and for her generosity in helping people.
Grace Smith, a member of the grange for 75 years, is the widow of Walter Smith. She is the mother of four children and she celebrated her 96th birthday on August 20.
Although she was born in Sangerville she has lived in Woolwich most of her life. She met her late husband Walter at the Grange Hall in Woolwich.
Smith worked at the Congress Sportswear factory in Bath before becoming a stay-at-home wife and mother. She enjoys her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She is the current holder of the Boston Post Cane as the oldest resident of Woolwich.
At the annual meeting August 14, the Woolwich Grange was also host to special guests State Grange Master Patrick Brewer and State Deputy Master of Sagadahoc County Merton Ricker.
The members and guests of the event were treated to a roast pork dinner prepared by Secretary Patty Bridgham, Lady Officer Ester Hauck and lecturer Barbara Chubbuck.
