The first lobster pound was built on Vinalhaven in 1875. This pound on Roads End was built in 1906 and belonged to the Higgins Company. Although it is not used as a pound any longer, it is one of five buying stations in the Boothbay region. If you look closely you may be able to identify some of the people that are removing lobsters from the pound. The first photo was added to the Boothbay Region Maritime Foundation Research Collection by the Boothbay Register. The second was donated by Christopher and William Stickney. The photographer was their father, Alden Stickney. Please share any background you may have about the Higgins Lobster Pound so that we may add it to the digital record. Look for a link to the research collection on our website (LINK) and you will find other great historical photos of fishing in the Boothbay region.
