Baking biz pans out for Westport Island woman

If you've had some good pie around town this summer, or maybe a pumpkin whoopie pie, there's a chance it came from the kitchen of Daphne Cromwell.

The Westport Island woman bakes and delivers her homemade pies and other desserts to area restaurants including Le Garage, the Marketplace, and Sea Digger's Grub in Wiscasset; Brown’s Wharf in Boothbay Harbor; and Southgate in Bath.

Cromwell, 51, has worked at Le Garage 17 years, waiting tables and baking desserts. With encouragement from the restaurant's owner Cheryl Rust, and a regular customer, Wiscasset architect James Schildroth, the 1980 Wiscasset High School graduate expanded to baking for other businesses.

Schildroth even made her some business cards.

“I said, 'Daphne, you have got to start putting your name out there,'” he said. “She's a hard-working gal and her pies are great.”

Blueberry is Schildroth's favorite, although lately he's been enjoying the strawberry-peach.

In addition to the pies and whoopie pies, Cromwell makes cakes and brownies.

Baking and cooking run in the family. Her grandmother Audrey Audette taught her to bake; and Cromwell's mother Julie (Malmsten) Kus and sister Bridget Spofford used to have the Boothbay Harbor restaurant No Anchovies.

The baking and delivery business is a good fit for Cromwell. “I'm a people person, but I also like that I can work at my house,” she said.

Her children, son Alex Cromwell and daughter Sam Cromwell, are always willing to help out by making a delivery or going to the store for an ingredient, Cromwell said.
