Boothbay Railway Village

586 Wiscasset Rd., Boothbay

Boothbay Railway Village is an outdoor history museum and re-created Maine town of 1850 – 1950.

The Village covers more than 15 acres and has more than two dozen historic and reconstructed buildings. Unpaved roads lead to structures typical of rural Maine. Many of our historic buildings have wheelchair-accessible entrances. The Village’s unpaved roads are generally firm and stable. Most roads are level, with steeper grade near the goat pen and blacksmith shop.

Our railroad operates with a combination of historic and replica rolling stock that can sometimes prove challenging for guests. Our conductors and engineers are always available to help with the two or three steps required to board. An open coach with ramped access for wheelchairs or scooters is available with 24-hour advance notice.

Nowhere else in New England can you ride the rails behind an authentic steam locomotive surrounded by historic Maine buildings preserved in a recreated village, and view a collection of 60 antique autos.

See listing of events in the calendar at the top of this page.

Founded in 1980, Boothbay Region Land Trust (BRLT) is a non-profit organization with the Mission to conserve for the public benefit the natural habitat, scenic beauty and working land of the Boothbay region.

132 Botanical Garden Drive, Boothbay

ROOTS: THE OTHER HALF OF THE STORY

At Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, we know that though much of the work of growing gardens happens below the surface, it’s no less powerful for going unseen. This year, we introduce our theme, Roots: The Other Half of the Story. Through innovative art exhibits, informative classes, entertaining programming, tours and more, you’ll find new ways to explore the unseen.

Our season of exploration will be anchored in artist Steve Tobin’s monumental outdoor roots sculptures spread throughout the Gardens. Between June and September, stop by our Education Center to see National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson’s 14-foot-tall photographs showcasing the infinite complexity of grass roots.

97 Cross Rd., Alna

Maine’s Wiscasset, Waterville, and Farmington (WW&F) Railway was a two-foot “narrow” gauge common carrier railroad that operated from 1894 until 1933.  The line ran from Wiscasset in the south, to Albion and Winslow in the north, never making it to either Waterville or Farmington.  The Great Depression brought about the railroad’s scrapping in 1937.

The WW&F Railway Museum was founded in 1989 to restore and rebuild the original railroad.  Since then we’ve restored 2.6 miles of railroad, rebuilt an original WW&F steam locomotive, and restored several  railroad cars. Current projects include reboilering another steam locomotive and rebuilding a historic bridge.

. During the final segment of the tour, visitors can climb the spiral staircase into the lantern room, view the historic photographs and documents in the covered walkway museum, sport-fish off the rocks, or picnic by the waterfront.

Herb and Doris Smith sailed around the world twice with their three children on schooners they built by hand. Five of the schooners they built are named Appledore.

Eastwind, their sixth schooner, is a sistership of Appledore III. They are authors of two books about their world voyages: “Sailing Three Oceans” and “Dreams of Natural Places.”

Your two-hour voyage aboard Boothbay Harbor's largest schooner Eastwind gives you time to relax and see the Maine coastline. Lighthouses, fishing lobstermen, wildlife, and remote islands accessible only by boat dot the seascape.

Booking online and at the ticket booth between piers 1 and 8, 20 Commercial St.

Built in 1807, the house was later redecorated and furnished to satisfy modern Victorian taste and sensibilities. A visit to Castle Tucker offers a glimpse into the everyday life of Mollie and Richard Tucker and their five children at the turn of the twentieth century. With three generations of family possessions on view, Castle Tucker is a time capsule that echoes with the voices of a remarkable Maine family.

Since 1894 the Opera House has stood in downtown Boothbay Harbor.  Originally built by members of the fraternal order, The Knights of Pythias (their crest remains emblazoned on the front of the building), the House served for decades as the lodge for both the Pythians and the Masons.  In the intervening years, it lived many lives,  and was a restaurant and bar and a private home and the downstairs performance hall was even transformed into a failed mini-mall for a period of time.

In 2009 the Opera House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Department of the Interior.

Some of the acts taking the stage in 2019 are ... Gaelic Storm, Jerry Douglas & the Earls of Leicester, John Sebastian, Tom Rush, The Subdudes ...
