Since the partial fire on July 9, 1962, when lightning struck the steeple of Head Tide Church, the pilasters, which are flat columns built into the façade, have been missing their plinths, or bases. After restoring the steeple to its original specifications last summer, the Friends of Head Tide Church addressed this longstanding omission. Structurally, plinths provide a stable base and protect the pilasters from moisture and damage. Visually, they ground the skyward-reaching pilasters.
June 18, Darryn Petersen of Pond Road Restoration fit and installed six plinths. The plinths were prefabricated in his shop from a tight-grained mahogany, chosen for its durability and authenticy, and are primed ready for painting.
The Head Tide Church was dedicated on Nov. 21, 1838. Since 1955, the Friends of the Head Tide Church have preserved the church and welcome visitors throughout the summer.
The Head Tide Church is on Head Tide Church Road in Alna. For more information, look for the church’s facebook page or please email Headtidechurch@gmail.com
