I am delighted after reading ‘New Future of Our Schools Committee in Boothbay region explores options’ article in the Wiscasset Newspaper. Finally, a larger community has publicly announced a similar exploratory project to the futures of the Wiscasset school system. Rumblings from Dresden and Edgecomb are also encouraging.

Last week, I promised to bring you all up to speed with the LCTV funding situation in Wiscasset. Well here goes!

In 2015, for whatever reason, the Selectboard in Wiscasset decided not to fund LCTV any of their reported fifty thousand dollars’ worth of franchise fees that they receive each year for the rights to run cable wires over town-owned property or better known as the public right of way. Everybody loves the American robin. There’s even a song about, “Robin, robin, robin redbreast, flies through the air and sits on a rail.” At least that’s how we learned it when we were kids. It’s easy to be inspired by robins, they live all around us, filling our neighborhoods with their songs, feeding on our green lawns, and nesting in our shrubbery. Checks might seem like something from the past, but scammers often use fake checks in their crimes so they can exploit the time it takes for them to bounce. During that waiting period, scammers will ask you to act on those funds. But once the check bounces, any amount you acted on is gone. This tactic shows up in several scam types from fake job and work-from-home scams (the fake check is to purchase equipment from the “employer” or for you to wire or otherwise send funds to “vendors”), to a seemingly innocent overpayment you received where you’re asked to send part of the money back.

Yes, this is another of my rare but ever hopeful editorials buoyed by whatever latest prospect for business in Wiscasset has made me dream again of a bowling center here. This latest prospect is so vague so far, it is ripe for the imagining.

From the town manager's report in advance of this week's selectboard meeting, it sounds like whatever it is is a ways from happening. The company, whoever it is, has not settled on where it will go, but at least Wiscasset might be in the running.

On another note: The past week or so, and perhaps even into much of this week, we will be experiencing some foggy weather. It’s all a part of easing into spring, I guess.

The thing I like about fog is how it can isolate scenery, even more, in some ways, than the selective nature of certain lenses. I’m sure you know what I mean. A boat drifting in a cove otherwise cluttered with a variety of objects. A pier jutting from a point of land against a fog bank. Ledges surrounded and alone in a way that a clear sunny day illuminates.It’s pretty cool.

Yet it often accompanies other forms of abuse–keeping someone from having money, a job, transportation or other resources is an effective way to control them.
