Margery C. “Marge” Smith, age 77, passed away on April 21, 2025 at the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing Center in Ohio where she was a resident.
She was born in Mount Vernon on Nov. 17, 1947 to John F. and Dorothy M. (Gavin) Houpt. Marge was raised in Mount Gilead, Ohio graduating from Mount Gilead High School in 1965.
After graduating, she attended West Virginia Wesleyan, where she met her first husband, Leighton “Butch” Cressey of Boothbay Harbor, Maine. They lived and raised their family there. While living in the “Harbor,” Marge worked a variety of jobs. She was a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother. She was also a charter member of the Boothbay Region Ambulance Service, teaching many of the first aid classes.
After leaving Maine, she remarried and moved to South Carolina. While there, she helped her then husband, Jim, in his cattle raising business. She was known to have bottle fed more than one calf in her kitchen.
She returned to Ohio and finished her working career at the Morrow County Hospital in the cafeteria, retiring from there. An avid reader, Marge also enjoyed baking, gardening, and crafting. In her retirement years, she enjoyed spending time in Indiana with family.
Marge is survived by her children: Nancy of Maine, Rob (Bliss) of North Carolina; grandsons: Quinten, Nathanial and Max; siblings: Lynn Wear, John (Sara), Mark (Marie) and Kevin (Sallie). She also leaves behind a large extended family, a “bonus son,” Charles “Danny” Keyes, and good friend Terri Connor.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
The family would like to thank the Wyandot County Skilled Nursing Center for their care of Marge while she was with them. There are no services planned at this time. The family will remember Marge at the annual Gavin Family Reunion this summer.
