Everyone is invited to the fifth annual Darrowby Farm Sanctuary Open House on Saturday Sept. 26 from noon to 2 p.m. at 216 N. Mountain Road in Jefferson.

With over 80 animals at this one-of-a-kind animal sanctuary, each of the goats, roosters, pigs, horses, cows, donkeys – and more – were rescued from situations of abuse or neglect and given a new home where they may coexist safely and peacefully forever. It goes beyond dignity or improved living conditions, the founders and staff of Darrowby spend every day of the week closely encouraging the best of health and life for each of the Sanctuary residents.

Six years ago, Mainers Amanda Glenn and Andy Theriault rescued their first animal and horse, Jay, who’d been left in conditions rendering his legs severely infected. Amanda recounted “That was Mother’s Day 2019 and Andy built the stall for him.” Jay was shampooed daily and a vet came to trim the infections for 13 hours. “And we started thinking this was something we could do … we had the help of a friend of mine who was interested in investing and getting this off the ground. And now we have over 80 animals.”

Amanda emphasized the high level and quality of personal care given to each resident, allowing them to live their lives in comfort and security.

The Open House is a free event and all are welcome.

There will be face painting and coloring stations, a Jamaican food truck, and pumpkins you can feed to the pigs – unless you’d prefer to paint and carve pumpkins yourself. Don’t forget to enjoy the regionally famous vegan cupcakes, both beautiful and delicious, and eye the artful collection of products sold on site.
