Wiscasset school referendum hearing Thursday

Thu, 11/20/2014 - 7:30am

Thursday night, Nov. 20 at Wiscasset Middle School, the town’s residents have the chance to say or ask anything about the Dec. 9 referendum on plans to close Wiscasset Primary School. The public hearing on next month’s ballot item starts at 6 p.m.

The hearing is part of the process triggered by a Wiscasset mother’s successful petition for the referendum, after the Wiscasset School Committee’s Sept. 15 vote to close the primary school next year. The committee and Interim Superintendent Lyford Beverage have maintained that the town would fare better financially by keeping the middle school open rather than the primary school, as the committee looks to merge the two. Some school department employees and some parents and other residents have questioned the figures the committee went by in making its decision.

Early arrivals Thursday can witness the committee’s planned vote to move grades seven and eight from the middle school to Wiscasset High School for the 2015-2016 school year. The panel supported the move at a meeting Monday night, but was unsure at the time if state law called for a formal vote. The committee’s special meeting, also at the middle school, is set for 5:30 p.m.
