CSC INSTRUCTORS SPEAK OUT
In our 25th Anniversary year Coastal Senior College salutes our instructors who give of their knowledge, their years of experience and especially their keen interest in sharing their valuable resources as the volunteer pillars of the College’s commitment to lifelong learning.
Indeed, WHY do they return to CSC with matchless enthusiasm and dedication?
The question we asked a faithful few: “What is unique about teaching at CSC that continues to lure you back time and time again?"
And here is what they said:
“The thing that makes teaching for Coastal Senior College so attractive is the students! They are eager to learn and bring perspectives based on a lifetime of experience, making classes a joy.” Ted Williams, Astronomy
“I taught college students for 40 years: they sometimes were ambitious, sometimes lazy, sometimes did their assignments, sometimes didn't. Teaching contemporaries in senior college courses is a whole new ball game. They are engaged, wise, thorough and honest. They bring so much more to a class than did their undergraduate counterparts. And so, I am grateful for a chance to teach them and learn from them.” John Ward, Literature
“I love teaching at CSC because our history-focused classes are like a collective investigation. Our senior students bring a lifetime of experience, infinite curiosity, and incredible resources to our discussions. There is an energy and engagement that is downright exhilarating!” Jayne Gordon, History
“I love the fact that members of the CSC community may at different times be volunteer officers, faculty members, or students. The sharing of roles creates a welcoming, democratic space for learning. I learn as both a student and as an instructor. Both roles provide the opportunity to delve into new material and reconnect with friends.” Charisse Gendron, Poetry & Literature
“It's wonderful to have the opportunity to share information about subjects that I feel passionate about. I savor the small classes that allow me to listen to each student and allow each student to share their ideas. Most of all, I appreciate the CSC students, who
care about learning and are willing to be adventurous about it!” Susan Borg, Music & Anatomy
“Part of my joy in teaching is creating an atmosphere which encourages participation. Once they settle in, adult students bring such varied experiences to the text that they shed new light on familiar texts and join with me in exploring new ones with greater depth than I could have alone. I always come away grateful for the shared experience.” Maryanne Ward, Literature
“I enjoy teaching at CSC because the community is full of students who are willing to take risks to learn about subjects that are new or scary to them. Making students comfortable and curious about challenging material is a great source of energy and joy.” Dick “Rashi” Nessen, Mathematics & Anatomy
“Working with committed lifelong learners is a delight because CSC's members sign up for courses because they want to investigate topics, not because they must enroll to fulfill requirements. Their contributions to discussions invariably teach me more than I could ever learn on my own, which means our sessions really DO produce valuable insights and formulate knowledge”. Michelle M. Miller, Literature.
