Fresh off his acclaimed HBO series How To with John Wilson, filmmaker John Wilson turns his famously curious eye toward an unlikely subject: concrete. As the world’s most widely used building material, concrete is everywhere, particularly in his beloved New York City. But when Wilson sets out to make the definitive documentary about it, he takes an unexpected detour through a workshop on writing Hallmark movies and decides to apply the familiar romantic formula to his decidedly unromantic subject.
What follows is a wonderfully unconventional, often hilarious exploration of creativity, human nature, and the absurdities of modern life. As Wilson’s filmmaking ambitions collide with the realities of the entertainment industry, The History of Concrete becomes about much more than sidewalks and skyscrapers. Filled with surprising encounters, offbeat humor, and thoughtful observations about the world around us, this delightfully unpredictable documentary proves that even the most ordinary subjects can reveal extraordinary stories.
As critic Scott Tobias of The Reveal observes, "the film is ultimately a reflection on human nature and the cycles of decay and renewal that shape our lives. And while a documentary about concrete might not sound particularly exciting, trust us—this one is anything but!"
