Mary Oliver believed that paying close attention to the natural world could transform the way we live. Mary Oliver: Saved by the Beauty of the World explores the extraordinary life and enduring legacy of one of America’s most beloved poets, whose deeply personal reflections on nature, love, and the human spirit have inspired generations of readers.
Drawing on rare archival footage, never-before-seen photographs, personal notebooks, and intimate interviews, the film traces Oliver’s journey from a solitary childhood to becoming the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of more than 30 collections of poetry and essays. It reveals the people, places, and moments that shaped iconic works such as Wild Geese and The Journey.
Featuring appearances by Maria Shriver, John Waters, and former U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón, along with poetry readings by Helena Bonham Carter, Stephen Colbert, Lucy Dacus, Steve Buscemi, and Oprah Winfrey, this moving documentary celebrates a writer whose words continue to encourage us to slow down, look closely, and find beauty in the everyday.
