Liam Purcell was first seen on the Lincoln Theater stage in the orchestra for the 2022 spring musical production of “Bright Star,” where audiences and performers had the privilege of experiencing his incredible skills on the banjo. Liam returned with his band Cane Mill Road in September of 2024. The band is made up of Zack Vickers on banjo, Devin Jones on guitar and mandolin, Aril Silver on guitar, and Teddy Kent on bass.

Hailing from Deep Gap, North Carolina, Purcell grew up less than a mile from the home of legendary guitarist and Appalachian musician Doc Watson. Surrounded by Appalachian old-time and bluegrass traditions, he began performing, writing songs and storytelling at an early age.

Purcell formed Cane Mill Road as a teenager and quickly established himself on the professional bluegrass circuit. By the time he was 17, the band had performed in 25 states, earned multiple Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass chart appearances and received the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2019 Momentum Band of the Year Award. In 2022, Purcell made bluegrass history by sweeping the RockyGrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking first place in guitar, mandolin and banjo. He remains the only person to accomplish the feat simultaneously.

“Everyone I’ve ever looked up to as an entertainer, Doc in particular, had never acknowledged boundaries between genre, style, origin, or influence. While I cared deeply about honoring the Appalachian Stringband music I loved, I also have my own songs inside, my own feelings to express, and my own innovations to contribute," Purcell said.

Now based in Nashville, Purcell continues to carry his Deep Gap roots to audiences around the country. With Cane Mill Road, he combines traditional bluegrass and old-time music with Americana, original songwriting, and the energy of a young generation of string musicians. The band has appeared at festivals and venues including MerleFest, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, the Berklee Performance Center and Wide Open Bluegrass, as well as on PBS's "David Holt's State of Music and WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour."
