Learn how to Get Your Captain’s License during a Meet ‘n’ Greet with Captain Greg Metcalf at the Sail, Power, & Steam Museum
Rockland – Ever wanted a captain’s license and wondered if it’s possible in Midcoast Maine? Well, it is possible because locally, you can complete the training and medical requirements to obtain a U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) captain’s license. Want to learn how?
On Saturday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to noon, attend a special Meet ‘n’ Greet event at the Sail, Power, & Steam Museum (SPSM) in Rockland with Captain Greg Metcalf, a Coast Guard-approved instructor, who will explain all the steps to obtaining a captain’s license.
Over coffee and sweets, Capt. Metcalf will explain the federal process handled through the National Maritime Center (NMC) wherein you can obtain a captain’s license as the Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV/Six-Pack), or obtain a Master license allowing for captaining vessels of 25, 50, or 100 tons.
You’ll learn all the steps to licensure:
· How to meet general basic requirements;
· How to document sea service (or time on the water);
· Complete medical and drug testing;
· Complete a USCG-Approved Captain's Course; and,
· Submit your application package.
Captain Metcalf has agreed to be the resident instructor for anyone interested in obtaining a captain’s license, with classes slated to be held off Sail, Power, & Steam Museum’s lobby, in the community gathering area.
Metcalf’s profound connection with the ocean dates to his early childhood, when under his father’s eye, he honed his skills in boat rowing, fishing, sailing, while embracing the freedom the sea offers.
Even as a teen, Metcalf secured a job as mate aboard a charter boat, and later, he financed college aboard private sport fishing yachts, participating in tournaments from Montauk, New York to Portland, Maine.
Eventually, following Providence College graduation, Metcalf assumed the helm of private yachts, actively participating in high-stakes big game fishing tournaments.
In 1983, Captain Metcalf obtained his U.S Coast Guard Captain’s license, and a year later, while simultaneously managing sport fishing yachts, he initiated a fishing tackle manufacturing business, designing, manufacturing, and marketing fishing tackle for the subsequent twenty-five years.
However, he discovered his true passion lies in teaching and helping others achieve their dream of becoming a licensed captain. He therefore founded the Atlantic Captain’s Academy in 2010, a distinguished institution that offers a meticulously crafted curriculum of Coast Guard–approved courses tailored for captain license candidates.
Metcalf is proud of his high success rate, having trained more than 3000 captains through his comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare candidates for the challenges of navigating and commanding vessels on the water,
