Brain Health Center open houses June 5, 12
A new vision for supporting memory loss and cognitive wellness is taking root in Wiscasset, and the community is invited to see it firsthand during open houses Friday, June 5 and Friday, June 12, both at 4 p.m. at the new Brain Health Center of ElderCare Network at Wiscasset Green at 21 Washington St., Wiscasset across from St. Philip's Church.
Families, healthcare providers, caregivers, volunteers and community members will have the opportunity to visit the newly renovated center, meet Medical Director Dr. Allan "Chip" Teel, Program Director Kara Chase, and members of the care team, and learn about an innovative approach that combines cutting-edge brain health science with warmth, dignity, creativity, and community connection.
The center was inspired by years of research into cognitive decline prevention and intervention and is designed to help people experiencing memory loss remain active, engaged, and connected to life.
Guests attending the open house will hear about advanced cognitive assessment approaches; brain imaging and wellness technologies; nutrition and lifestyle-based brain health strategies; daily brain fitness and engagement programming; family and caregiver supports; planned respite services; and volunteer and community partnership opportunities.
Visitors will also experience Phase 1 of the center's most anticipated feature: a beautiful new therapy garden courtyard created through the generosity of the Garden Club of Wiscasset. Designed as a peaceful sensory and reflection space, the garden will offer participants opportunities for relaxation, therapeutic gardening activities, conversation, outdoor gatherings and quiet moments surrounded by flowers, greenery and seasonal beauty. Organizers hope the courtyard will become both a sanctuary and a living symbol of growth, connection and renewal.
"Nature has an extraordinary ability to calm, stimulate memory, reduce stress and create joy," said Dr. Allan Teel.
"The therapy garden will be an essential part of the daily experience here."
Inside the center, visitors will see welcoming community spaces designed for music, conversation, exercise, art, games, educational programs and shared meals. The Brain Health Center emphasizes engagement, stimulation, movement, purpose and social connection.
Families affected by their loved ones' memory issues or experiencing caregiving stress are especially encouraged to attend. "This brain health program is about possibility," said Dr. Teel. "We want families to understand that new approaches are emerging, and that support, knowledge, and hope matter." Refreshments will be served.
