Bruce M. Johnson, passed away Jan. 26, 2020 in his home in Southport, Maine.

He leaves his wife of 40 years, Enid. Those who love and will miss this kind man are not only Enid, but also his two children by his first wife, Nancy Murray (who predeceased him): son Scott Johnson (Jennie) of Westhampton, Massachusetts and their daughter Nicole; and daughter Diana Fournier (Stephen) of South Portland Maine, and their daughter Deirdre (Andrew, and great grandson Theodore) of Little Rock, Arkansas, and son Chase (great-granddaughter Naomi born just a week before Bruce’s death) of Seattle, Washington. With his marriage to Enid, he signed up for and embraced five more children: Deb Allen (David Meath) of Ferrisburgh, Vermont; David Huntley (Sue) of Suffield, Connecticut; Ned Huntley (Breda), who sadly passed away and was surely in heaven to greet Bruce when he arrived; Kathy Whitney (Scott) of South Deerfield, Massachusetts; and Liz Huntley (Bruce Field) of West Whately, Massachusetts. Enid’s kids provided six more grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Bruce and Enid spent time with all those little ones, not caring which family they started in, sharing love and humor whenever possible. The grandchildren have very fond memories of being in Maine with Grampy and Eenie, often on a boat, fishing for bluefish; or walking to the store for a treat; or “hiking” to Pratts Island to build fairy houses. Many of the grandchildren got their start in sailing at the Southport Yacht Club in Cosy Harbor. There is also a host of local friends who remember him with great respect and affection, speak of his ready and wonderful laugh, and remember him as a compassionate gentleman.

He was the only child born to Dr. Milton and Verna Johnson of North Attleboro, Massachusetts on May 3, 1936 (one day after his wife Enid’s birthday, so he could joke about being married to an “older woman”). He had a childhood full of friends and mischief, with adventures during that time that he loved to share, with great laughter, later in life. He attended Mt. Hermon School and graduated from Tufts University, where he played on the tennis team. He later got his MBA from the University of Rhode Island. He worked for Foxboro Co, and in his spare time loved to fish in Narragansett Bay with friends and his children. After his divorce he moved to Southampton, Massachusetts where he joined Hampshire Imports, a clothing import business started by a good college friend. He and Enid met in Southampton and moved to South Pasadena, Florida to care for Bruce’s mother after his dad died. He spent many years as a successful realtor in Florida. They bought a home in Southport in 1984 and summered there for years before moving permanently to Maine in 2002.

The community of Boothbay Harbor benefited mightily from that move. Due to Bruce’s sharp mind and giving spirit, he spent countless hours volunteering on the Boards of Directors for the Boothbay Regional Ambulance Service, the YMCA, and Student Aid Fund. With the assistance of other concerned citizens, he helped found the Boothbay Region Community Resource Council. He and Enid were also active volunteers for Rebuilding Together, the Merrill Auditorium, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra, and were recently recognized as Volunteers of the Year by the PSO. One of his happiest moments in the past few years was being surprised by the Boothbay High School girls’ basketball team at a special halftime ceremony acknowledging him as their special fan. He was an active member of the Boothbay Harbor Congregational Church.

At his request, there will be no service. If Bruce touched your life and you would like to honor him, donations can be made to any of the organizations in which Bruce was involved.
