Stephen and Helene Huyler are mounting an epic estate sale featuring exotic treasures from their travels around the world as a benefit for Finding Our Voices, at 10 Sea St. in Camden on Saturday, Sept. 19. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine.

“For the past weeks we have been going through every drawer, cupboard and box in our house.” said Dr. Huyler, “We are letting go of beloved treasures that we collected in antique markets, bazaars, and craft studios in India, Turkey, Afghanistan, Morocco, and Britain as well as the United States.” This enormous sale includes fine china, glassware, and silver; folk art and rare antiques, cooking supplies, children’s toys, Christmas and Halloween decorations, prints and paintings, and Dr. Huyler’s own framed photographs from eight books and multiple museum exhibitions.

Finding Our Voices is the Camden-based nonprofit supporting Maine women survivors of domestic abuse and their children, celebrating its fifth year this month.  Dr. Huyler pointed out that his life’s work —championing and giving voice to the often neglected women of India—closely complements their mission. 

“We are thrilled,” he said, "to give every penny of the proceeds from this event to benefit Finding Our Voices, and hope this will encourage others to also donate to them.”

A fanciful Indian awning will cover the driveway where the event is taking place, so come rain or shine. The first 50 attendees to make a purchase of more than $100 will receive a  toile tote bag designed by Anneli Skaar and donated by the Farnsworth Museum..

Dr. Huyler will be signing copies of his memoir “Transformed by India: A Life” at Symmetree Base Camp, 20 Bay View St., on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. during the Camden Art Walk. The 2025 memoir chronicles more than five decades of immersion in Indian culture, beginning with his arrival on his twentieth birthday by bicycle rickshaw in 1971.
