Evelyn L. Giles
Evelyn Lovisa Giles died peacefully at the Gregory Wing, St. Andrews Village, Boothbay Harbor on April 19, 2014.
Evelyn was born September 21, 1927 at home on Giles Hill in Boothbay, the daughter of the late Milton Andrew Giles and Lena Campbell Giles. She was one of two daughters and nine sons.
She attended Boothbay schools and spent the rest of her life taking care of her home and family. She rarely ventured far from the homestead. She loved taking care of the animals on the farm, as well as growing some of their food. She loved the land and those around her.
She also spent her entire life taking care of children. She would load all of her nieces and nephews, as well as the neighborhood kids, in the back of her truck on hot summer days and take them to Giles pit for a swim. She also let a lot of future Seahawk basketball players use the hayloft in her barn to practice.
She was a physically and mentally strong woman and could do whatever was needed, from housekeeping to changing the placement of a 1,500-pound bull from one field to another; carrying a maul hammer and iron steak in one hand and leading the bull with a chain, like it was a puppy, in the other.
Evelyn was with many relatives as they died, and no matter what was needed, she would give whatever she had.
She never married, and was predeceased by her parents, her sister Cora May, and her brothers, George Everett, Milton Andrew, Ernest Herbert, Lincoln Alpheus, Elmer Thomas, Paul Beverly, Kenneth Leroy and Ladell Gilman.
She is survived by her brother, Carlton Allen Giles, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.
There will be a graveside service to celebrate Evelyn's life at Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay on Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m., with Alfred Roberts officiating.
