Garden Club to hear about winter sowing

Mon, 01/23/2023 - 8:45am

The Garden Club of Wiscasset will hold its next program at 1 p.m. Feb. 2 in Fellowship Hall of First Congregational Church, 28 High St., Wiscasset. A brief business meeting is at 12:30 p.m.

Refreshments follow the program, which is free and open to the public. In the event the Wiscasset schools are closed due to snow, the program is rescheduled to Feb. 9.

Matthew Hall-Webb and Jaci Neilsen of Pinetree Garden Seeds in New Gloucester will discuss winter sowing. Winter sowing has been practiced by farmers for centuries. It is making a comeback and you do not need grow lights, heating pads, or a greenhouse. It involves using containers that can tolerate outdoor mid to late winter weather. Examples are liter bottles, milk cartons, or plastic salad containers which act as mini-greenhouses.

A step by step instruction on how to sow and germinate seeds, and what supplies are needed, will follow. Endless possibilities present themselves. Pinetree Garden Seeds is a Maine family-owned company that provides organic, heirloom, hybrid and non-GMO seeds to customers all over the U.S., and which has been doing so for over 40 years.
