The Boothbay Region High School/Wiscasset Middle High School girls and boys cross-country teams qualified for next week’s State Meet by finishing high at the Southern Maine Class C Regional Championships on Saturday, Oct. 24. 

According to coach Nick Scott, the girls' team, seeded 5th, finished as runners-up, while the boys, who needed to place at least 7th to continue the long-running streak of qualifying for states, were able to secure a 7th-place finish.

“A special congratulations to AJ Crocker (8th) and Polly Nadeau (6th) for placing in the top 10.  Anytime you can place in the top 10 of a championship meet, it is a really big deal,” said Scott in his weekly email. “A shout-out to John Cooper, who ran a PR, 20 seconds faster than his FOC finish. Miles Hyson also achieved a new PR, breaking into the 20-minute range for the first time. Congrats to Isaac Meyers, who ran 20 seconds better than his previous best. Twin Brooks isn't a PR course, so for anyone close to their personal best, it was a really good day.”

The girls meet has 77 finishers and the boys meet had 101 finishers. Ten teams competed in the girls meet and 12 teams competed in the boys meet.

When looking year over year, check out these improvements: AJ Crocker - 19 seconds; Jackson Zehm - 54 seconds; John Cooper - 71 seconds; Audrey Robinson - 1 minute 56 seconds; and Maggie McCarthy - 2 minutes 47 seconds.

State Championships

The Class C State Championships will be on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Cony High School in Augusta. The start/finish is behind the high school, and the race continues onto the trail system in the woods. Boys will race at 12:20 p.m. and girls at 1 p.m.
