Hooray for town meetings
Dear Editor:
I had the privilege of participating in our annual Town Meeting. It was thrilling to be part of actually determining how our Select Board will meet its obligations to our community by granting funds that serve us all, and agreeing to cover the cost through the taxes we will pay next September.
With each warrant article, each of us could vote up or down, having a real impact on the question: “what sum the town will vote to raise and appropriate for…” the many services, road maintenance, and worthy causes in our community. This is what democracy is about—giving our local government power of, by and for the people.
It was also thrilling that the three members of our Select Board are all very smart, thoughtful, helpful women, as were the Town Clerk and Tax Collector/Treasurer, who fielded questions fired from our citizens with competence and grace.
Each of the 55 warrant items reflected their thrift and thoughtful planning ahead for the future.
After robust discussion, skillfully managed by our esteemed (though off-island) moderator, Chris Cooper, we graciously voted to support all of our Select Board’s recommendations.
Bravo to all concerned! I feel blessed to live in this beloved community in Maine.
