Lincoln County Indivisible protests the John Roberts Supreme Court
On Saturday, Aug. 15, from Wiscasset to Lincolnville Beach, and from Thomaston to Port Clyde, residents of Lincoln and Waldo counties lined local roads and streets. They were carrying signs protesting the role of John Roberts, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, in decisions gutting the voting rights act, permitting unlimited amounts of “dark” money to be funneled into elections, taking away the right of women to control their own bodies, allowing ICE to engage in racial profiling, denying immigrants basic legal rights, placing President Trump above the law, and rolling back worker and personal rights in a dozen other ways.
Along with signs detailing the Supreme Court’s assault on core tenets of our legal system, in Wiscasset on one side of the bridge Lincoln County Indivisible (LCI) held “Signs of Democracy” and on the other side of the road spread out along Main Street with “Signs of Fascism.” In Thomaston, rally participants wore the signs of fascism and democracy on front and back, and in Lincolnville Beach Indivisible Waldo County displayed “Signs of Fascism.”
In Port Clyde supporters of Audacity, from Rockland, lined the waterfront while a flotilla of kayaks, paddle boards and other small vessels paraded in front of Hupper Island, the summer home of Chief Justice John Roberts.
Widespread spontaneous support from passing cars and pedestrians highlighted the popular anger at this Supreme Court. The Court has struck a raw nerve by reversing decades of law protecting voting rights, and personal and constitutional freedoms, and by opening the floodgates of corporate and billionaire funding in our elections.
The Midcoast Indivisible organizations and Audacity will continue their collective Summer of Action in defense of our democracy and Constitution. Next up for LCI are “standouts” in Waldoboro on Saturday (Aug. 22) from noon to 1 pm and Dresden on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. All who are concerned at the unremitting erosion of long-cherished rights are welcome to join in. Now is the time to stand and be counted.
