The Little Dyer Cabin is open
Little Dyer Pond is at the heart of Hidden Valley Nature Center (HVNC) in Jefferson. The pond is over 100 acres, and is more secluded than most in the region. There are no boat launches or public landings, and there is next to no development on the shoreline. In fact, HVNC operates the entire western shore, more than one mile of shoreline.
Over the past year dedicated volunteers at HVNC have led the construction of the Little Dyer Pond Cabin, HVNC’s newest building. The new cabin, a 20 by 20-foot timber frame, is spacious, well insulated, and sits right on the edge of the quiet pond. A woodstove heats the space nicely in winter, and large windows afford a beautiful view as well as well as provide great light in all seasons. Like the other buildings at HVNC, the cabin does not have water or electricity.
The Little Dyer Cabin is accessible by foot, mountain bike, or cross country skis and is about one and a half easy miles from the parking lot following broad, well maintained trails. Visitors should bring with them whatever they think they need for a comfortable stay. The only things included in the cabin are a pot to boil water, firewood, and a table. Once at the cabin visitors can take advantage of the canoes nearby, fish the pond, or go for a swim.
The cabin is not just for overnight stays. It is also available as a quiet place to meet, make art, host a retreat or workshop, do yoga, or otherwise be immersed in the beautiful setting. Anyone interested in staying in the cabin overnight or using it during the day can inquire about availability by calling 207-200-8840, or writing to info@hvnc.org. From now until Nov. 31 the donation is $45/night for HVNC members, and $65 night for non-members. Find out more about the cabin at http://hvnc.org/little-dyer-cabin.
HVNC is home to three other buildings, two huts and a yurt, that are also available for use year round. Each one offers a unique backcountry experience and is worth a visit. There are also two tent sites designated along the shore of Little Dyer Pond.
