Make ‘good trouble’ rally and standout July 18
John Lewis was an American civil rights activist and longtime U.S. congressman from the state of Georgia. He devoted his life to the quest for justice and right up to his death in 2020 championed the idea of “getting in ‘good trouble,’ necessary trouble, to redeem the soul of America.” He taught us that you are never too young to make a difference, to vote always, to advocate for people who can’t advocate for themselves, to speak truth to power, and to never give up.
This Saturday, July 18 is the six-year anniversary of John Lewis’ death. In honor of his work and legacy, Lincoln County Indivisible (LCI) is partnering with the Miles Delivers Action Coalition, with support from MVPR and local businesses, to host a John Lewis ‘Make Good Trouble’ rally at Veteran’s Park in Newcastle.
The rally will include local speakers on what it means to Make Good Trouble. Despite the serious underlying messaging, we intend this to be a joyful, family friendly celebration of John Lewis’ legacy with music, face painting, bubbles, a contest for children to describe ‘what it means to you to make Good Trouble’, and prizes provided by local merchants.
We will gather from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by a standout on the Newcastle/Damariscotta bridge from noon to 1 p.m. featuring pithy signs, creative posters, provocative banners, playfully serious costumes and street theater antics. Costumes and homemade signs are welcome and encouraged.
