Marlene Coady
Marlene Coady, born June 18, 1935, died peacefully on April 19, 2014.
Marlene was born in Boothbay Harbor and grew up in Spruce Point.
She was predeceased by her mother, Martha Kelley Boudreau; her father, James Kelley; her stepfather, Edward Boudreau; and her husband of many years, Bernard Coady.
Marlene is survived by her two children, Kelley Coady and John Coady, both of Boothbay Harbor; granddaughter, Courtney (from Kelley), and from John, granddaughter Danita Pope and her husband Garrett Pope and their daughter, 2-year-old Alexa.
Marlene also leaves behind a sister, Margaret (Peggy) Stover and her husband Joseph Stover; a brother, Eugene Kelley; a brother, Milton Kelley and his wife Roberta Kelley; sister in-law, Mary Wallace and her husband Richard Wallace; brother in-law, John (Jack) Coady and his wife Irene; her beloved goddaughter, Stephanie Leeman; and many beloved nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Marlene was in Florida when her health declined rapidly, and her death came quickly. Before John and Kelley could make the trip to Florida, Marlene was loved and supported by treasured family friends, Rhoda and Curtis Henderson. Through the years, they treated her like a mother; being there for her through her life and at the end when she needed them.
Among the greatest joys of Marlene’s later years were her grandchildren. She cherished Courtney’s many gifts, with art being among her favorites. Danita enjoyed many wonderful times with Marlene while growing up with John in Boothbay Harbor. During one of her last healthy weeks, Marlene spent the entire time with Danita, Garrett and young Alexa, giving her great-granddaughter endless hours of love and attention.
Marlene spent her life in Boothbay Harbor working many jobs (Bob’s Photo, First Federal Bank, Wheeler’s Drugstore) to actualize her skills and support her family. Even with her many work hours in and out of the home, she still found time for her children, never missing a school or sports event, going beyond to support the team and organizations. Many knew Marlene from her days at Wheeler’s Drugstore; who could forget the sound that bubbling machine made when it poured the liquid into the paper cup held by an aluminum holder, and then there was the paper straw to boot. That was a nice treat, but it was the time spent with Marlene, who always a sported a smile and wanted to hear about our activities and life, that was most special.
For many, childhoods with Marlene extended from the drugstore to her home, spending precious hours under her love and tutelage. Along with her own two children, Marlene leaves behind many many other children who considered her “Mom.” Some she saw through her entire life, others only once in awhile. But, for all, she had that same glow and pride, relishing in their lives, their children and their other accomplishments.
A private burial with John and Kelley was held with Simmons, Harrington & Hall on May 27.
Condolences may be left for the family at Marlene’s Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com.
